Officer Trainee - Degree

Foundation degree/Scottish Professional diploma - Marine Operations/Nautical Science or Marine Engineering


The Foundation degree/Scottish Professional diploma sits within a 3 year training programme (approximately) that will qualify you as a Junior Officer, giving you Officer of the Watch (OOW) certification. This is the first stage of gaining your professional seafaring qualifications. (This is the only route available to become a certificated Electro-Technical Officer).

Entry Requirements

120 UCAS points in unspecified A Levels or Scottish Highers & GCSE Grades A-C/Scottish Standard grades at Credit Level in English, Maths, a Science based subject and at least one other subject.

Who suits this route?

Trainees undertaking the Foundation degree/Scottish Professional diploma will be academically and practically inclined and will be expected to carry out independent learning and research. This route includes maths and science development/practice. Trainees following this route will have aspirations to achieve seafaring certification at the highest levels with the opportunity for further study to Honours Degree.

Honours degrees - BEng Marine Engineering or BSc Nautical Science

This will usually be a three-year degree programme plus six months (for engineering) or a year (for deck)of sea time, which may be interspersed during holiday periods or included at the end of academic study.

Entry requirements

Entry is in accordance with the requirements of sponsoring companies and the admission requirements of the universities concerned and will usually require Maths and/or a Science A Level or Scottish Highers.

Who suits this route?

Trainees undertaking the Honours Degree will be academically good, independent learners who enjoy analytical and problem solving scenarios with a practical application. This route includes a dissertation. Trainees following this route will have aspirations to achieve seafaring certification at the highest levels.
