What inspired you to pursue a career at sea?

I decided to pursue a career at sea because I knew that I wouldn’t enjoy a regular office job and wanted to do something that combined hands on experience with critical thinking skills. I also like the idea of travelling the world whilst getting paid for it.

How have you found the training course?

I have found my training course to be both engaging and highly informative. I understand that each individual’s training experience may vary, however, I believe there is an excellent balance between practical, hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge. This combination has helped me develop a stronger understanding of ship operations and bridge procedures.

One of the highlights of my training so far was manoeuvring the vessel into an anchorage for the first time. This experience was particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in a real operational setting and further develop my confidence and practical skills.

What skills or traits do you believe are most important as an officer cadet?

I think having good people skills and the ability to communicate with anyone is massive in the maritime industry as you will meet people from all over the world and from different walks of life. I also belive as a Deck cadet you need to be able to show a willingness to learn and the ability to ask questions. Teamwork is also a great skill to have.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting a career at sea?

Some advice I would give to anyone thinking about a career at sea would be to consider that it is a lifestyle and you will be away home for 6-8 months of the year, with limited communication and working everyday of your contract. However in saying that, it is a very rewarding career with the opportunity to travel the world, with good pay and long periods of time off.
