What inspired you to pursue a career at sea?
Knowing people who worked at sea, and hearing about the job made it something I wanted to do myself. Growing up by the sea, it felt like the natural path. I liked the idea of practical work with real responsibility.
How have you found your training course so far?
I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s challenging at times, but in a good way. The mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience has helped me build confidence and understand why things are done a certain way on the water.

What skills and traits do you believe are most important as a Deck Rating / Coxswain?
Good communication and teamwork are essential. You need to stay calm under pressure, be aware of your surroundings, and take responsibility for your actions. A willingness to learn, reliability, and a strong focus on safety are equally important.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting a career at sea?
If it’s something you’re interested in, give it a proper go. Turn up with a good attitude, be willing to learn, and put the effort in. You’ll make mistakes along the way, but don’t let them put you off—learn from them and move on. It’s not always easy, but it’s honest work and you get a lot back if you commit to it. Most importantly, enjoy it.
